EMDR
-
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based, structured psychotherapy designed to help the brain heal from trauma and distressing life experiences.
When you experience a traumatic event or ongoing high stress, your brain's natural ability to process information can become overwhelmed. As a result, these memories can get "stuck" or frozen in your nervous system, leading to emotional distress, anxiety, or repeating patterns in your current relationships.
-
EMDR does not make you forget what happened. Instead, it changes how the memory is stored in your brain and your relationship to the memory, significantly reducing the emotional distress and physical tension tied to it. Over time, the painful memory loses its grip, allowing you to develop healthier insights and a greater sense of resilience.
EMDR is also well-documented in helping individuals manage:
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias
Chronic stress and burnout
Complicated traumatic grief
Distressing life transitions
EMDR is a collaborative, eight-phase approach. Together, we will focus on past experiences that set the foundation for your current struggles, the present situations that trigger your distress, and the future skills you need to move forward with confidence.
-
Rooted in the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, EMDR therapy helps your brain safely reprocess these stuck memories. Using Bilateral Stimulation (BLS)—such as guided eye movements, gentle taps, or alternating sounds—we stimulate your brain’s natural information processing system.
EMDR does not erase your past. Instead, it changes how those memories are stored. By the end of therapy, the painful memories lose their emotional and physical grip. You can expect to feel more grounded in your body, more secure in your relationships, and deeply resilient moving forward.
-
Standard EMDR focuses on processing stuck memories. By integrating Attachment-Focused and Somatic modalities, we deepen this healing by honoring how your history impacts your relationships and your physical body today:
Attachment-Focused EMDR: We pay special attention to early life relationships, childhood neglect, and relational trauma. If you experienced a lack of safety or connection growing up, we use relational repair and powerful internal resources (like nurturing or protective figures) to heal those early wounds.
Somatic Integration: Trauma doesn't just live in our thoughts; it lives in our bodies. We track physical sensations—like a tight chest, a racing heart, or a feeling of numbness—as we process memories. Connecting your mind and body allows your nervous system to fully discharge trapped stress and complete its natural healing process.
